Drag show expected to bring the heat

Organizers suggest bringing a fire extinguisher to Pride Awareness Month’s annual drag show — it’s going to get hot.

The 12th annual drag show will be April 12 in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and seating is first come, first served.

The show is free and open to the public.

The theme of the show is “Gainesville is Burning: A Drag Show,” an homage to “Paris is Burning,” a documentary about the drag scene in New York City, said Anthony Licari, the show’s director.

It will feature “RuPaul’s Drag Race” veterans Pandora Boxx, Sharon Needles and Manila Luzon.

Drag kings Leona Chiarappa and Lauren Hannahs, known on the stage as Hunter de la Rose and Craven More, will also make appearances.

“The drag show bends the rules,” Licari said. “It makes people comfortable being themselves.”

Jessie Pincus, public relations director for Pride Awareness Month, said she expects about 500 people to attend.

“The queens this year are class acts,” Licari said. “And we’re all college students — adults. Some profanity is accepted.”

VIP tickets are available through the event’s Facebook page. Tickets can be requested online and picked up at any Pride Awareness Month event before the show.
