Volleyball fundraiser to benefit March of Dimes

Students can raise money for premature babies Saturday during a volleyball fundraiser.

PowerPlay Volleyball will host a volleyball tournament at 9:15 a.m. at Forest Park Fields, 4501 SW 20th Ave., to raise money for the March of Dimes.

Participants can pre-register to play with a team of four people or register Saturday. Players can participate in one of four divisions. Each division is based on skill level.

The tournament will include male teams, female teams and coed teams.

It costs $25 per player to play in three of the divisions, said John Babbit, owner of PowerPlay Volleyball and tournament director.

To play in the highest skill level division, called OPEN, participants must pay $30 per person. It costs more to play in this division because participants are competing for at least $400, Babbit said. The final prize will be determined by how many teams compete.

Students will get a $5 discount with a student ID, but the players range in age from about 15 to about 60.

Babbit said he is expecting about 20 to 30 teams to play but said the field can hold about 50 teams.

He said he hopes to raise about $2,000 for the March of Dimes. This is the second year Babbit has hosted a tournament to benefit the charity.
