At 7:30 p.m. today, the Reitz Union’s Rion Ballroom doors will open for a Pride Awareness Month concert.
Bands Uh Huh Her and The Shondes will perform to an expected audience of 250 people, said Pride Awareness Month Public Relations Director Jessie Pincus.
The concert will cost about $8,500 to put on and is free and open to the public, she said. Reitz Union Board Entertainment is co-sponsoring the event.
Kelly Richard, a RUB bands co-director, said the bands have rock ’n’ roll and electronic feels.
The Shondes will perform at 8 p.m. followed by duo Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey from indie-alternative band Uh Huh Her, Pincus said.
Hailey is known for her role as Alice on the lesbian drama series “The L Word,” which ran for six seasons on Showtime.
This is Uh Huh Her’s first college show, said Justin Soto, the director of Pride Awareness Month.
“I think students will be able to feel their excitement,” he said.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the groups of all-female performers immediately after the show at about 9:30 p.m., Soto said.
Ricky Carter, RUB treasurer and UF Pride Student Union president, loves Uh Huh Her’s lyrics.
“When I first heard them, I was hooked,” he said. “It’s catchy, but not cliche. I can relate to it and think it’s fantastic music.”
