Phillips Center to host contortionist dance group

Students will be able to see the Pilobolus dance company perform this weekend without turning their wallets inside-out.

The company, known for its contortionists who form objects such as cars and trees with their bodies, will perform Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

This is Pilobolus’ fourth trip to UF and part of the company’s 40th anniversary tour.

The company performed shadow works on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and appeared in a Hyundai commercial and OK Go’s “All is Not Lost” music video.

Renee Jaworski, Pilobolus associate artistic director, said she hopes audience members will leave the performance inspired by the human body.

“We take what we’re capable of as humans and make it interesting,” said Jaworski, a member of the Pilobolus team since 2000.

Pilobolus, which is based in Washington Depot, Conn., has three artistic directors, 120 original works and about 25 dancers. The company creates three original productions every year.

Phillips Center spokesman Todd Taylor said this is a great opportunity for students.

Taylor said when Pilobolus came to the Phillips Center in 2008, 1,340 tickets were sold. He expects about 1,000 attendees on Sunday.

Tickets are available online and cost $12 for UF students. General admission tickets range from $20 to $40.
