Hotrods will gear up this weekend for the Gainesville Street Rods annual car show.
Gainesville Street Rods will host the 30th annual Cruz-In car show Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event will be free for spectators. It will cost $20 to register a car, truck or motorcycle. Children can register their bicycles for $5.
Registration will be between 10 a.m. and noon, and each person who registers will receive a gift bag with coupons. About 50 trophies will be given out for awards.
Gainesville restaurants will sell barbecue and ice cream during the event.
Proceeds will go to Stop! Children’s Cancer Inc., a Gainesville nonprofit organization.
The organization will use the proceeds to fund clinical trials for pediatric cancer research at UF, said programming director Laura West.
Last year, the event rose close to $6,500 for the organization, according to Gainesville Street Rods President Tim Myers.
Stop! Children’s Cancer was founded in 1981 by Howard and Laurel Freeman, of Gainesville, after their daughter Bonnie was diagnosed with cancer, according to the website.
The organization was Bonnie’s idea, according to the website, and she wrote letters to friends to get funds to start it up. Since then, it has grown to help children’s cancer research through donations from events like the Cruz-In car show.
