Spring UF Performing Arts Center performances to go on sale

Student tickets for the 19 UF Performing Arts Center performances running March through May go on sale Wednesday.

Phillips Center box office manager Robbie Stevens said he doesn't know how many tickets students will buy, but he doesn't think the number will differ from other seasons.

This is the last of four waves in which students can buy tickets for UFPA sponsored performances.

"We haven't seen a huge change this year [so far]," Stevens said.

Since the beginning of fall semester, the Phillips Center Box Office sold 1,400 student tickets for UFPA-sponsored events, he said.

Prices for student tickets to shows March 2 through May 13 range from $12 to $20, depending on the show.

General public audience members can reserve tickets at any time. Students can reserve tickets in waves based on when the show is coming to campus.

Stevens said he has no expectation for how many tickets will sell on Wednesday.

People now wait longer to buy tickets than they did five years ago and buy them closer to the performance, he said.

"That's not to say these shows don't sell well," he said. "They just sell well later."

However, there are certain shows that always sell well, Stevens said.

"STOMP," Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific" should do well, he said.

"Musicals are always popular with students," Stevens said. "It's a fact."

"STOMP" will probably sell a few hundred tickets Wednesday, he said.

Student Government subsidizes each student ticket, which is why they are sold at discounted prices.

UFPA marketing director Amy DouglasCQ said, "The University of Florida is one of the few universities that has such a wonderful program that allows students access to the performing arts at a discounted price."
