For the Saucermans, every day is Valentine's Day.
Alvera Saucerman, 79, and Jim Saucerman, 80, spent Tuesday at the Valentine's Day Sweetheart Dance at the Senior Recreation Center. Going to dances isn't unusual for the couple, who have been married for 60 years and met each other in elementary school.
They go to every dance hosted by the Swing and Sway Dance Club, which organized Tuesday's dance, Alvera said.
When the couple met, Jim was in third grade. Alvera was in second.
"You tell the story of how we met," Alvera said to her husband. "You're better at it."
The first time he saw her was at school. He immediately ran to find his aunt who worked there to tell her he had a new girlfriend, he said.
They became friends, started dating before high school and were married. She was 19, and he was 20.
"We're just really grateful to be together and in good health," she said.
Usually they're on the dance floor the whole time, she said, but Alvera's feet were hurting. After two dances, the couple walked out of the dance room and sat on a sofa together.
Both worked in education their entire lives, so they were never rich. But they said that didn't stop them from pursuing their mutual passion for travel.
Ten years ago, the Saucermans went bungee jumping in Queenstown, New Zealand.
He held her hand, and they laughed as they recalled their bungee jumping adventure.
"I thought they wouldn't let us do it because of our age," she said. "I was getting ready to protest, but then the woman said, ‘Boy, do I have a deal for you.'"
Back on the dance floor, laughter filled the room as some of the men spun their ladies around to Frank Sinatra songs.
"The neatest thing about it is that people in wheelchairs and walkers throw them away and dance," said Otto Johnson, president of the Swing and Sway Dance Club.
