A man died when a car crashed into him on Interstate 75 Thursday afternoon while he was fixing his engine.
A Florida Highway Patrol report gave this account:
Harry Benjamin Young Jr., 57, died on I-75 in Marion County after he pulled to the side of the southbound lane and got out of his Volkswagen Beetle. The Summerfield man was working on the engine of his car when a Chevrolet Silverado sped toward him.
The driver, 56-year-old Ernest Ray Pinkard, of Ocala, started swerving when he had a "medical emergency," according to the report. He weaved back and forth between the lanes.
Pinkard drove off the road and into the west emergency lane — directly in the path of Young's car.
He slammed into Young and hit the back of the Beetle. The crash jolted the Beetle onto the right lane of I-75, and the Silverado stopped in the emergency lane.
Young was declared dead on the scene when Marion County Fire Rescue officials arrived.
Pinkard had minor injuries and was taken to Munroe Regional Medical Center.
Charges in the incident are pending.
