For two years, 19-year-old nursing and psychology major Lyana Issa has slept with a flashlight under her pillow and her bedroom door wide open.
"That day still gives me nightmares," Issa said. "Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night thinking that the ground is shaking."
The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010, killed about 200,000 people and affected 3 million people, according to the Disasters Emergency Committee.
Two years later, members of UF's Haitian community hope that people will continue to remember Haiti by participating in relief efforts.
Club Creole will host a benefit banquet at 8 p.m. on Jan. 27 at the Paramount Plaza Hotel and Suites, 2900 SW 13th St.
Profits from a silent art auction will benefit Project Haiti.
During the fall semester, the nonprofit organization Hope for Haiti sent educational supplies to its sister school in Jacmel, Haiti, said the group's public relations co-chairman, Anissa Nadal.
"This semester we hope to send more supplies around the island, predominantly in Port-au-Prince," Nadal said.
