Norman Hall evacuated after someone pulled fire alarm

Students and faculty were evacuated from Norman Hall on Tuesday after someone pulled a fire alarm.

The fire alarm sounded at about 3 p.m., said Maj. Brad Barber, public information officer for the University Police.

There was no fire.

Safety standards require a building to be evacuated when one of its fire alarms is set off.

UPD and Gainesville Fire Rescue arrived on scene shortly afterward to investigate.

It took between 10 and 15 minutes to determine that Norman Hall was safe and that people could return without fear of harm, Barber said.

"Once it was confirmed there was no fire or threat, the fire alarm was silenced and the individuals were allowed back into the building," he said.

Students and faculty were permitted to return to Norman Hall between 3:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., Barber said.
