Volunteering at events looks excellent on resumes, but nothing says "I'm dedicated" quite like making a commitment to a volunteering organization around campus.

Luckily for eager volunteers, there are several community service organizations around UF that help students connect with the Gainesville area and beyond it. Students can build relationships with other nonprofit organizations through these groups, and the best part is that membership in student organizations is usually free and it makes resumes look outstanding.

One organization in particular is the FYCS Club at UF. This is a club dedicated to family, youth and community sciences, and it is an extension of what is taught in FYCS classes. The organization allows students to apply the concepts they have learned in class as they reach out to the community and make an effort to help those in need.

The mission for FYCS Club, according to its Facebook page, is "to provide all students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills through networking, service and social activities."

The FYCS club has recently done Trick or Treat for the Troops, in which they packed boxes filled with small toiletries, hard candy and Gator paraphernalia for Gator alumni serving overseas, and members are now preparing for Gators March for Babies, an event that is open to the public and will take place later in the month.

For anyone interested in the FYCS club, it is an excellent resource as well as a great opportunity to meet peers who also want to make a difference in Gainesville. The club is open to anyone who wants to join, and a general meeting will be held on Nov. 10 where future volunteering opportunities will be discussed.
