People at a local gym had to take a sudden break from their pushups on Thursday when a faulty smoke detector sounded the building's fire alarm and led to the gym's evacuation.
Gainesville Fire Rescue was notified at 10:34 a.m. of a potential fire at the main center of Gainesville Health & Fitness, 4820 Newberry Road.
The agency sent employees to the building to investigate, said District Chief Rusty Barrett of Gainesville Fire Rescue.
The trouble, it turned out, wasn't a fire.
Barrett said firefighters found a smoke detector giving a false reading.
Brian Russell, spokesman for Gainesville Health & Fitness, said the evacuation lasted for about 10 minutes before people were allowed back inside the building.
"The fire department got here very quickly. They just have to come in, walk through and make sure that there's not any smoke or any signs of fire, and then they give the all-clear," he said.
Employees quickly evacuated the building when the alarm went off.
"It's an inconvenience, but I think people appreciate being safe rather than sorry," he said.
Russell said he doesn't think Gainesville Health & Fitness has recently had repeated problems with faulty smoke detectors.
But sometimes alarms will trigger if people open certain doors in a facility, such as near the basketball court area, he said.
