Two city commissioners have picked the candidates whom they support to replace them.
Commissioner Jeanna Mastrodicasa, who holds the citywide At-Large 1 seat, has decided to support former commissioner Lauren Poe.
Commissioner Scherwin Henry, who holds the District 1 seat, is supporting Armando Grundy.
Both commissioners cannot run for re-election because they've reached the limit of two terms. Each term lasts three years.
Mastrodicasa said she supports Poe because they have similar stances. She said Poe worked to lower the city's millage rates, which affect property taxes.
Mastrodicasa worked with Poe during his three years on the City Commission, which ended when he lost his re-election race in the spring.
Henry said he's mentored Grundy for two and a half years. He said Grundy has worked hard to get ready for this role.
Henry said Grundy approached him three years ago and asked for a chance to learn from him.
Since then, Henry said, Grundy's been involved in the city, serving on the Alachua County Charter Review Commission.
"He's prepared himself to succeed me," Henry said.
Grundy is an Army veteran who served in Operation Enduring Freedom as a paratrooper.
