Gators for Obama, a committee of the UF College Democrats, began the organization's voter registration project Wednesday. It is registering voters from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Turlington Plaza as a start to an ongoing effort to ensure students are registered to vote in Alachua County for upcoming elections.
The College Democrats had previously delayed registration operations due to barriers established in the controversial new voting laws passed by the Florida legislature this year.
Now, the organization has completed measuring the new risks and has affirmed the proper safety precautions needed for another successful year of voter registration on campus.
Of course, the College Democrats understands that students more often give their votes to Democratic candidates.
In fact, the student vote was critical in the election of President Barack Obama and in the large, across-the-board Democratic victory in 2008. The College Democrats hopes to get a head start in time for the presidential election in 2012 so that students at UF may have their voice heard once again.
The College Democrats is a student organization representing the Democratic Party at UF. We seek to promote party ideals, campaign for candidates and issues, hold demonstrations, provide political opportunities and unite students who share our beliefs.
