Female comedians spice up Hispanic Heritage Month event

More than 100 students came ready for a good laugh and some Latin jokes Tuesday night.

UF's Hispanic Heritage Month 2011 presented "HHM Comedy Night: Uniting All Shades of Laughter," featuring two Latina comedians - Lisa Alvarado and Shayla Rivera.

Anastasia Rios, HHM's comedy night director and fourth-year economics major, said she knew she wanted to pick female comedians for the event.

Rios said male comedians have presented at comedy night in previous years.

"I really liked how they're strong women and single moms," Rios said. "I liked their background and their humor."

The opening act has usually been done by a local comedian free of charge, Rios said.

But, thanks to additional sponsors, she was able to bring two professional comedians to UF.

Rios began planning the event last spring.

The Caribbean Student Association and Student Government's Women's Affairs and Multicultural Affairs cabinets co-sponsored the event.

Hispanic Heritage Month 2011 events will continue through Friday.
