Do you remember the day that you fell in love with music?
Maybe you don't remember the exact day, but I bet most people remember that first song, artist or album that really stood out.
Growing up as a middle-class Caucasian girl with a view too liberal for her tiny Mississippi hometown, I was almost destined to be attracted to the rebellious rock sounds of Green Day's 1994 album, "Dookie."
Since there are only three members in the band, its musical boundaries are limited. However, what Green Day does inside these limits is edgy enough to keep the "punk" sounds strong, while creating catchy songs.
Coming from the perspective of a former angst-machine (the dreaded teenage girl), I found many of the songs on the album to be very easily relatable.
The lyrics aren't hard to understand, and the melodies can get stuck in your head for days.
This album is very different from the more modern, complex Green Day records like "American Idiot," which was dramatic enough to warrant its own Broadway production.
I am in no way bashing their more recent work, but I personally prefer the developing sounds of their younger days.
Everyone who calls himself or herself a music lover has that one instance that made him or her realize, "Hey, this stuff is pretty good. How can I get more?" For me, Green Day's "Dookie" was that album. What was yours?
