A Gainesville woman and former UF student was arrested Tuesday on a charge of aggravated child abuse after being accused of smothering a 10-month-old child she was babysitting with a pillow.

According to the arrest report, the baby's mother came home early from work and saw Tiffany Long, 21, of 6029 NW 53rd Terrace, holding a pillow over the baby's face. The mother told police she saw her baby's legs flailing.

Police said that when confronted by the mother, Long threw the pillow, put up her hands and asked her not to call the police

Long told police the baby was crying uncontrollably, and she was playing peek-a-boo to quiet her down. Long later said, she never got a chance to play peek-a-boo.

Long withdrew from UF in the fall.

She was being held at the Alachua County Jail Wednesday in lieu of $35,000 bail.
