Tacos on campus will soon be much harder to come by.

Today at 8 p.m., Taco Bell will close its location at the Reitz Union, a UF official confirmed.

Mike Mironack, the Union's director of operations, said the decision was made between the Taco Bell franchise and Gator Dining Services, though he couldn't give specific details as to why.

The manager of Taco Bell was also not allowed to say why the restaurant was closing; she could only say it would not be around for Summer B.

Calls and emails to Gator Dining were not immediately returned.

The loss of the campus' Taco Bell means students will not be able to get a meal on campus for less than $1.

Whether it was a Cheese Roll-Up for 89 cents or a Beefy 5-Layer Burrito for 99 cents, Taco Bell has always been a cheap alternative for students on a budget.

The cheapest meal available in the Reitz Union will now be a slice of cheese pizza from Papa John's for $2.50.

The Reitz Union has no current plans for a new business to move into the Taco Bell space, Mironack said.

"We are not 100 percent sure how we are going to use the space at this point," Mironack said.

Graduate student Andrew Stewart said he eats at Taco Bell frequently.

Stewart likes the convenience of having one in Reitz Union as opposed to taking the hike down University Avenue to get his favorite item, the Crunchwrap Surpreme.

He has watched the inexpensive food options slowly vanish from UF's campus.

"I used to go to Wendy's, and that closed down too," he said. "There's not really anymore cheap food around here now."

Janelle Guzman, a UF wildlife ecology junior, said she doesn't eat much at Taco Bell but was surprised to hear that it was closing.

"I never thought I'd see the day," she said. "It's been there ever since I've been to UF, so I never really thought it would close."

David Peterside, a fifth-year bioengineering student, was also shocked to hear that Taco Bell would no longer be a part of campus life.

"It's really surprising," he said. "On my way to the bus stop, it's usually packed, especially around lunch time."

Peterside said he ate there because of the cheap food.

"If something more expensive goes there, I'll be sad," he said.
