By May 1, life was supposed to get tougher for many PC users on campus.
UF wireless was going to require security checks for laptops running Microsoft Windows. Computers without anti-virus protection and the latest Windows updates were supposed to experience problems accessing the system.
But the system is still not in place.
"[The wireless security checks] were not implemented," said Matt Grover, a senior network engineer at UF, in a voicemail. "We backed off due to implementation problems."
Though Grover did not say when the system will be implemented, the May 1 edition of the system would have only been a trial period. Computers that failed the checks would still be allowed onto the network, according to a UF press release.
The changes were scheduled in order to reduce identity theft and are not unlike the security checks required to access the Department of Housing and Residence Education network and the Health Science Center network.
