UF stand-up comedians enjoying national, local spotlight

Stand-up comedians in Gainesville have it pretty good.

The team representing the University of Florida has advanced to the Select 16 of the National College Stand-Up Competition.

Other members of the stand-up community will be opening for Jim Tavare tonight. Tavare is a British comedian that is now based in Los Angeles, but you might recognize him from his role as the innkeeper Tom in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”

Tavare was brought in through RUB Entertainment and the Reitz Union that put together a group last week of impersonators of Sarah Palin and Nancy Pelosi.

While Paul Laier and Justin Plemmons open for Tavare tonight, the president of the University Stand-Up Club, Timothy Keck, will be opening for Brian Posehn.

Keck, with fellow comedians Evan Rocha and Rudy Mendoza, will be performing the opening sets to Posehn’s all new stand-up set.

Audiences may know Posehn from his time on “The Sarah Silverman Program” or on the “Comedians of Comedy” tour, where he performed with Zach Galifianakis and other comedians.

As UF’s spring semester ends, there seems to be something exciting to see in the comedy scene every week. Both the university and the campus comedy clubs are working with departments to provide national names in comedy for students to enjoy.

Be sure to vote for UF’s stand-up competition team starting Thursday as they hope to advance to the Ultimate 8 Elimination Round.

Also, if you so choose, I’ll be checking the gainesvillecomedy@gmail.com email open throughout the summer if any readers have questions or comments they’d like addressed in the fall semester.

See you on the flip side, Gators.
