Gainesville’s own Swamp Head Brewery is now offering what some judges have named the best beer in Florida.
It’s been a big month for Swamp Head. Its new tap room has opened to the public, the brewery started selling take-home growlers of its beer, and, to top it off, Swamp Head dominated the competition at this year’s Best Florida Beer Championships, held March 5 through 7.
Last year was the first time it participated in the competition, which features the top amateur and professional brewers in Florida, and it cleaned up, winning six medals with its fledgling line. This year, however, it won 11 medals. Its seven golds consisted of Wild Night, Stump Knocker, Blackwater Floridian Dark Ale, Smoke Signal, Hoe Hoe Hoe, Saison Du Swamp and the brewery’s flagship brew, Big Nose IPA.
Swamp Head received more medals than any other brewery in Florida, including awards for the Best In Show (Blackwater) and Best In Show Runner Up (Smoke Signal).
To try some yourself, go to the brewery, which is open 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at 3140 SW 42nd Way.
On tap, try Swamp Head’s main lineup in pints or in a flight of samples. In addition, on tap you’re sure to get a few of their limited-release beers. While Swamp Head has yet to sell its beer in bottles, you can still take some home. It sells quart- and gallon-sized growlers of its main line.
