Students passing in front of Library West on Thursday morning were treated to books they could really sink their teeth into.
The fifth annual Edible Book Contest, hosted by UF’s George A. Smathers Libraries, celebrated National Library Week with 18 different book-themed cakes.
Each creation reflected the theme of a book, from Harry Potter and “Alice in Wonderland” to “Where the Wild Things Are.”
Jennifer Childree, a 28-year-old graduate of Santa Fe College, won the contest for her cake based on the Dr. Seuss book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”
Childree said she chose that book because she really likes how it relates to real life.
She said her cake took three days to create.
“I’d love to do it again,” Childree said. “It was a lot of fun.”
A panel of three judges chose the winners in the four remaining categories including best children’s book, best adult book, best pun and the most realistic book.
Library Reserves Coordinator Angela Mott has been helping with the UF Read-A-Thon festivities since 2005. According to Mott, the contest continues to grow each year.
Mott said every library tries to do something to celebrate National Library Week. The Edible Book Contest is just a fun contest the libraries at UF like to put on.
