Brian Posehn is a comic who likes his metal heavy. But the red-bearded, 6-foot-7 inch self-identifying music lover and nerd doesn’t aim to limit himself to a specific niche. Instead, he tries to include whoever is in the crowd, often by poking fun at himself.
Posehn’s demeanor is less death metal, more Mr. Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street.
“That is a big part of my persona where it’s just, you know, lovable and kind of beaten down,” Posehn said.
Maybe most famous for his regular roles on “The Sarah Silverman Program” and “Just Shoot Me!,” Posehn has built a respectable career for himself as a writer, stand-up comic and actor. Even so, some people who go to comedy clubs don’t know who they are seeing or what kind of comedy they are going to get. Doing comedy shows at rock venues in college towns suits him much better, Posehn said.
“There are smart kids, and even though I’m 20 years older than them, I feel like I still have the same interests,” he said. “Anybody who likes to have a beer and play video games I have a lot in common with.”
The fact that Posehn’s comedy album is released by heavy metal label Relapse Records makes the title even more irreverent.
“I wanted the cover to look like an old-time metal album but then with this big goofy joke,” Posehn said. “And then having it on radio and making the DJs say ‘Fart and Weiner Jokes’ was a lot of fun for me.”
Brian Posehn will be performing at Common Grounds on April 13. Tickets are available at http://commongroundslive.com and at Hear Again Music downtown.
