The righty’s pinch-hit RBI single scored Josh Adams from second
base for the only run of the game as Florida (9-1) beat Miami (4-6)
1-0 on Saturday in McKethan Stadium.

“It was a clutch situation,” Smith said. “They brought in the lefty
… I knew I had to see a ball and I had to drive it, so that’s what
I did.”

Hitting at the bottom of the order for the second game in a row,
Adams drew a walk from UM starter E.J. Encinosa (0-2) to leadoff
the eighth. The right-hander was pulled after 102 pitches and
seven solid innings for lefty reliever Sam Robinson.

“We thought it was a better matchup in that situation with Bryson,”
O’Sullivan said. “He’s a senior … and he deserves that
opportunity.”

Smith knew he would get a chance at the plate as soon as Robinson
came in from the bullpen, and the senior said he was ready for the
late-game situation.

“The key with pressure is you got to stay relaxed and you got to
stay within yourself, and that’s what I did.”
"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Times New Roman;">As
a Georgia native, Smith wasn’t as familiar with the rivalry between
Florida and Miami. But his game-winning RBI gave the senior a
taste, as it was the first 1-0 game between the two schools since
1971 and the first time the Gators shut out the Hurricanes in
Gainesville since Feb. 20, 1994.

After Preston Tucker grounded into a double play to end the eighth,
righty Anthony DeSclafani (2-0), who pitched two scoreless innings,
sat the Hurricanes down in order in the ninth to earn the win and
clinch the series.

DeSclafani relieved starter Hudson Randall, and the two combined
for the team’s first one-hitter since May 5, 2002.

Randall continued his early-season success, pitching seven
scoreless innings, striking out five and giving up no walks while
earning a no decision. In 18 innings of work, the righty has struck
out 15 batters and walked zero.

Randall said “pretty much everything” was working for him Saturday
afternoon, particularly his slider, which he said was his out pitch
against Miami.

The right-hander had a no-hitter through five innings before giving
up a leadoff single to center fielder Dale Carey in the sixth.

try not to think about those things when I’m out there playing the
game, but once I was done I was kind of mad about it” Randall said.
“It was in the back of my mind.”
