Day two at the Schenkel Invitational followed a similar script as
day one for the Florida men’s golf team. On the strength of under
par rounds from standouts Bank Vongvanij and Phillip Choi, the
Gators maintained their spot in second place on the leaderboard,
six strokes behind the Auburn Tigers.
Vongvanij sits on top of the individual leader-board after another
stellar round, shooting 4-under on day two. An eagle on the seventh
hole, a par five, highlighted Vongvanij’s day.
Sophomore Phillip Choi is currently tied for fourth after shooting
a 2-under 70 Saturday. Choi would be sitting higher on the
leaderboard, but he double-bogeyed on 18.
Other rounds turned in by Florida golfers included Andres
Echavarria’s 2-under 70, which puts him in a tie for 15th and Tyler
McCumber’s 2-under 70.
Saturday’s under par score for the sophomore was especially
gratifying because it came on the heels of a 5-over round on Friday
that wasn’t counted in the team’s total.
“We had a roller-coaster day,” explained head coach Buddy
Alexander, “we kind of got in a little funk, but then we made a
rally... on holes 15, 16, and 17.
On Sunday, Vongvanij and Choi will have their eyes on an individual
title, while the rest of the team will be looking to do its part to
help make up the six stroke differential between them and
Auburn.
When asked about his team’s chances for a Sunday charge, Alexander
said, “we still have a chance, so we’re going to come out and
compete hard.”
