The African Student Union will host the 39th annual showcase Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom.
The evening will feature a variety of performances, including African dancers, a play, storytellers, a fashion show and a choir.
This year, the show will feature live music and spotlight local Africans who have made a difference in their communities.
“The songs they play are songs that most of our parents listened to when they were growing up, so I want to see how people react,” said ASU President Hanns Frimpong.
The ASU will provide free, authentic African food. Audience members also can win prizes if they correctly answer trivia questions about African countries.
Two former ASU presidents, Rilwan Ajayi and African artist Conphidance, will co-host the event.
Because the show is on campus for the first time in its history, Ajayi said it will impact students more this year.
“I’m excited for the Student Body to get a dose of a mini world tour of the continent of Africa,” he said.
“People need to know that there’s more to the country of Africa than just what people see on TV.”
