HIV testing event sees disappointing turnout

Fewer than 10 UF students showed up for free HIV testing in the Reitz Union basement Wednesday afternoon.

Caitlin Niblick, historian of UF VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood, said it was disappointing because in the past the group has had to turn people away from the test.

Niblick believes the low turnout was due to the fact that students just didn’t know about it and because there were not as many organizations involved.

She said students should not be afraid to walk up in the future to grab a free condom, sign up for HIV testing or ask questions.

Tim D’Annecy, secretary of the organization, said the group hopes to really step it up this semester by offering free testing at least two or three more times.

“We have a huge shipment of testing strips that we want to use,” D’Annecy said.

The testing was part of National Condom Week, which began Monday and will continue through Friday.
