I’m disappointed to hear about the Student Senate’s anti-gun resolution. I do hope they understand that their resolution will not stop people with bad intent from carrying guns, only those of us who follow the law and intend to use our weapons for self-defense.

Anyone who thinks that every heated debate in intro biology is going to end in a John Woo-style shootout should watch a little less TV. There is significant research showing that areas that adopt concealed carry laws benefit from reduced crime or, at worst, no change. Criminals know that campuses are defense-free zones so long as they can avoid the campus police department, and that makes them a target.

I hope some members of the Student Senate think this through a little better and understand that this bill will not turn UF into a Wild West full of gun fights and showdowns at the Reitz Union.
