Four UF law students studying abroad in New Zealand are safe after the country was rocked by an earthquake earlier this week, UF officials confirmed Wednesday.
The earthquake, which has left billions of dollars in damage and killed at least 75 people, struck the island Tuesday.
According to the UF Levin College of Law’s Facebook page, the students, who are studying in the city of Christchurch, were not in their housing when the earthquake hit. Their housing and belongings, the page said, may have been destroyed.
Matt Walker, media relations manager for UF Levin College of Law, could not release the students’ names due to student confidentiality but did say the students are safe. It is unknown whether they will be able to complete their study-abroad program, which was supposed to last for the semester.
Analysts estimate that the earthquake, which registered a 6.3 magnitude, left up to $12 billion in damages.
