The Wisconsin union crisis took us by surprise.
We first heard about it when state senators started fleeing the Capitol building. That flight struck us as odd, but the photos of protestors jamming the building by the thousands stuck with us even more.
As the nation watches politicians such as Gov. Scott Walker, waiting for the state to make some progress on its budget cuts in one way or another, we want to put them in the background for a moment. Let’s recognize the determination of the people sleeping inside the Wisconsin State Capitol just to wake up for another day of protests in the morning.
If there was a question about the impact of the decisions the state is making about the policies on government employees, it has been answered thousands of times.
Not only are the members of the unions involved making their voices heard, but people from other countries are supporting them by ordering pizza for them.
Why are people around the globe trying to ensure these people stick to their guns?
Maybe it’s because watching a country known for the rights of its people seems to be trading fairness for money.
It’s a balance that must be struck, but it may be that the Egyptians and Chinese helping the Wisconsin teachers are seeing a bigger picture which the state legislators are missing. For them, our country has presented an important question: Must we sell ideals for practical solutions?
