Fifteen bucks can get you a myriad of goodies. It can get you 15 downloads on iTunes, a new Blu-ray or a meal at Yamato Japanese Steakhouse.
Now, 15 bucks can get you Microsoft Office.
Starting Wednesday, UF began selling copies of Microsoft Office Professional Plus Suite for the discounted rate of $15. The discounted software is available to all UF students, faculty and staff.
Mac versions of Office are also being sold.
Copies of the software are burned onto CDs, which are then sold to students at the UF Bookstore in the Reitz Union, and the Computer Help Desk in the Hub.
In addition, the CDs carry an upgraded version of the Windows 7 operating system.
In the first six hours the software was available, 700 copies were sold, said UF spokesman Steve Orlando.
“Everybody knows that students are on tight budgets and cost-conscious,” Orlando said. “This is a great way to help students save, in this case, several hundred dollars.”
The discount is made possible by the technology fee that students pay as part of their tuition and by an extension of UF’s agreement with Microsoft, Orlando said.
Representatives of the UF Computing Help Desk advise students not to attempt to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. It is preferred to upgrade from Windows Vista operating systems.
