Next time you read a police story, you probably won’t be hearing much from Lt. Steve Maynard.
That’s because Sgt. Todd Kelly has taken over as Alachua County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.
Maynard will be working in the patrol division as shift commander.
When Maynard took his new position, Sheriff Sadie Darnell began a search to find a replacement. She said she chose Kelly, out of eight to 10 sergeants and lieutenants in the agency, because of his range of jobs within the department.
Since he was hired by the sheriff’s office in 1999, he said he has run the “whole gamut” of police work.
He started in the uniform patrol division with on-road patrol and then moved to the K-9 unit a year later, covering criminal investigations, robberies and homicides.
He also served on the sheriff’s offices dive and rifle teams.
Kelly said he will use that experience in his new job.
“I have a broad perspective of the agency,” he said. “I kind of know what [other officers] are going through and what they’re experiencing because I’ve been there and done it.”
