“She played great tennis from the first day to the last day,” coach
Roland Thornqvist said. “She got outplayed today but Maria is
clearly one of the nation’s better players.”

However, in doubles action, Janowicz and Alex Cercone picked up a
good win over Stanford’s pair of Carolyn McVeigh and Stacey Van
(8-2).

other action, No. 30 Joanna Mather defeated No. 74 Micaela Hein of
Arizona State (6-2, 6-2) and No. 28 Cercone fell to Hein’s
teammate, No. 34 Kelcy McKenna (7-5, 6-4).
"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Times New Roman;">“I
was happy with the way Alex played as well, particularly in
doubles,” Thornqvist said. “She played well, but not quite well
enough to win.”

Thornqvist said all three of the team’s freshmen could improve
their strength and conditioning in order to take their game up a
notch.
