If you found yourself sucked into the exotic world of Pandora in James Cameron's “Avatar,” then get ready to be sucked back in for two sequels.
But you're going to have to wait another three years before seeing the Na’vi in theaters again.
James Cameron has confirmed that “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3” will be released winter 2014 and 2015, respectively.
“I am in the process of writing the next two ‘Avatar’ films now,” Cameron told Entertainment Weekly. “We are planning to shoot them together and [edit them in post-production] together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart.”
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are definitely going to reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri, but it’s not clear yet who else will be returning for “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3” — much less what new stars will be signing on for the sci-fi sequels.
Cameron did tease about the return of some familiar faces when he told EW, “Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form.”
Cameron also revealed that a portion of the profits from the sequels will be donated to charity. Considering that the first film pulled in more than $2.7 billion at the global box office, that should amount to some significant donations.
“Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the 'Avatar' world,” Cameron said. “I didn’t want to make more 'Avatar' movies without a grander plan in place.”
“Avatar” has earned a lot of money and a lot of praise, but was the film good enough to warrant those? Will the sequels just become more overhyped films that lack originality and instead focus on technology, or will we dive deeper into the characters and world of Pandora now that we are past the introductions?
Guess we'll have to wait and find out, as we won't be seeing these films for some time.
