A giant chicken outside Library West is urging passing students to sign a PETA petition.
The organization’s college chapter, Peta2, has been on campus since Wednesday encouraging students to petition for additional vegan and vegetarian options at Gator Dining locations on Mondays.
In early November, Gator Dining Services began having “Meatless Mondays” and offering more vegan and vegetarian meals to promote healthy eating at Broward and Gator Corner dining halls.
But organizations such as Peta2 would like to see the dining halls go completely meatless on Mondays only.
“The school has the blessing of students to expand vegan options on campus and remove meat from dining halls on Mondays,” said Ryan Huling, assistant manager of college campaigns for Peta2.
The petition has about 1,200 signatures, which will be delivered to Gator Dining Services officials at a meeting on Dec. 10. By then, supporters hope to have at least 3,000 signatures.
Huling said meatless meal options are important to many students.
“Students support meatless Mondays because they recognize that vegetarian and meatless options are better for keeping off the Freshman 15 and helping animals,” Huling said.
