UF frat house catches fire after hookah tips over on mattress

A fire at the Sigma Chi fraternity house, 8 Fraternity Row, on Wednesday morning will lead to the eviction of one house resident and a mandatory fire safety educational session from the Gainesville Police Department.

A fraternity member had fallen asleep with the coal in his hookah still burning. The hookah had tipped over, lighting the mattress on fire.  Hookahs are not allowed inside the house.

The Gainesville Fire Rescue Department arrived minutes later and ventilated the room, said JoAnne Rice, district chief of the department.

No one will be living in that room anymore, and the membership status of the brother will be determined next week at an internal hearing.
