Students got a taste of world hunger Thursday night.

About 60 people attended the UF World Hunger Banquet at Hillel, which was put on by the UF chapters of Oxfam America and the One Campaign in an effort to raise awareness about the unequal distribution of food in the world.

"This is just to give a small insight to what is really going on in the world," said Jamie Whalen, president of the UF Oxfam chapter.

"We can't choose the countries we're born into, we can't choose the circumstances of where we live, but every person has the same basic human rights of food, water and shelter, and people shouldn't be denied that based on their income level."

Those who attended were assigned cards dividing them into three sections of.

The low-income sat on the floor and ate rice and water. The middle-income group was allowed to sit in chairs and eat rice and beans. The high-income group sat at tables and ate spaghetti and salad.

The distribution of seating was designed to reflect the actual percentages of people who fall within these brackets. Roughly half the attendees sat in low-income.

"A lot of people are [disillusioned] with helping the international community because they can't really see the results because it's so far away, but we can really make an impact here," Whalen said.
