Less than 24 hours after Ohio State blew out Florida 93-75 in the O’Connell Center, the Gators lost another battle with the Buckeyes.
This time it was off the court, though.
Amir Williams, the No. 7 center in the nation (according to Rivals.com), signed his national letter of intent with Ohio State on Wednesday, the final day of the fall signing period.
The Beverly Hills (Mich.) Country Day four-star big man had narrowed his choices down to the two schools before ultimately inking with coach Thad Matta’s team.
“I’m feeling pretty good right now,” Williams told The Detroit News.
“I just felt comfortable with everything they were telling me at Ohio State. I felt comfortable with the players and the coaching staff. They’ve been successful in sending a lot of good players to the pros, and I hope to get to the NBA one day.”
At 6 feet 9 inches and 220 pounds, Williams would have been a huge signing for the Gators, as the team’s starting frontcourt — Chandler Parsons, Alex Tyus and Vernon Macklin — consists of seniors, and depth in the middle could be a concern next season.
With Williams spurning the Gators, the team’s 2011 recruiting class still only has one signee — five-star shooting guard Brad Beal.
