Let's be honest. We're kind of lame. Our generation thinks that texting American Idol counts as voting, watching music festivals is done on TV and activism means "like-ing" a Facebook page about a cause.
And let's not even try to remember the last time we listened to real music (Hint: Ke$ha doesn't count).
It's time to redeem ourselves, Gainesville. Let's wash away the sins that are bubblegum ballads and lyrics about, like, boys.
With the risk of sounding like Bob Dylan's public relations rep (Geez, I wish), it's time to step away from a generation of lackluster tunes and pay homage to the 1970s, a time when music icon Bob Dylan led a counterculture not so concerned with the tastes of technology. Here's five reasons you really need to see Dylan do his thing on Friday - besides the fact that it would make a cool status update.
1. We all need a dose of inspiration. He wrote the major theme songs for the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement, became the icon of a generation and is still touring at the age of 69. And you thought you were busy with your financial accounting class.
2. To hear real music, which means no computers, no auto-tuning and no back-up dancers. Just talent.
3. He's more than a good song or two (to completely underestimate) - he's history. Time magazine has called him "master poet, caustic social critic and intrepid, guiding spirit of the counterculture generation." Kind of a big deal.
4. To listen to lyrics that actually have meaning. Sure, everyone loves their money and hoes, but hearing a song with an actual message is quite refreshing.
5. You can tell your grandkids that you got to see Bob Dylan. Or you can just tell your mom, who will be equally thrilled.
