As students, we should each take the opportunity to learn a lesson of acceptance and civility from the recent tragedy at Rutgers University.
Here at UF, we know of the harm and disunity that can be brought about by unwillingness to accept the differences that make us such a dynamic and diverse group of individuals. Even as recently as last month, we experienced the divisiveness brought about by the actions of the Dove World Outreach Center. Every day, we grapple with decisions that affect us and the people around us. Our words and, more importantly, our actions have a profound impact on one another.
We should not take for granted the value of respecting each other’s backgrounds and cultures.
At UF, we must continue the great tradition that precedes us and strive to be open and accepting of all people. From our multitude of cultural organizations to our strong commitment to providing every group of students with engaging programs to take part in, UF has shown itself to be a school devoted to fostering friendship and acceptance of others. Our experiences here have taught us it is imperative to learn from people whose backgrounds are different than our own and apply these lessons inside and outside of the classroom.
With this tragedy at Rutgers still in mind, I want to encourage all students to hold each other to a higher standard and to learn that even the slightest insensitivity can bring about pain for others, whether it be intentional or not.
We cannot allow such intolerance to cast a shadow upon the spirit and vibrance that is present in our community. I urge you all to be civil, accepting and respectful of one another.
