Schools locked down after robbery

Two west Gainesville schools were temporarily locked down Tuesday as the county sheriff’s office searched for the man who robbed a local store at gunpoint and has yet to be caught.

At about 11 a.m., the man walked into Haile Jewelry and Loans, at 2725 SW 91st St., and pointed a handgun at the clerk, according to ASO spokesman Art Forgey.

He demanded jewelry and ran away northward into a nearby neighborhood. ASO searched the area with patrol cars and helicopters and had Lawton M. Chiles Elementary and the Rock School put on lockdown for a few hours, Forgey said.

ASO called neighborhood residents to tell them to be on the lookout; however, the man hadn’t been caught as of Tuesday night. The suspect is described as a 5’8” white man between 140 and 180 pounds.
