Mr. Solon is right to condemn our government’s clandestine escapades. They are inexcusable stains on this country, but they are not products of capitalism.
Leftist states have been just as quick to perpetrate the horrors he ascribes to the CIA and often on scales not seen in this country. In fact, many of the most heinous crimes of the past half century were committed by communist states. And when it comes to sabotaging economies, leftist governments don’t need CIA help. The allegation that corporations control U.S. policy smacks of conspiracy theory.
I’m not so naive as to think corporate lobbies have no effect, but too many people attribute too much of the evil in this world to money. Maybe, just maybe, the crimes governments commit come from government, not from free trade.
