In response to Sean Quinn’s Wednesday column, I think Rock 104 changing format is just what this town’s radio monoculture needs.
Most towns and cities with colleges our size have at least one radio station that plays either independent and/or local music. That Rock 104 was the best our town had to offer to college-aged rock lovers was pretty sad.
With both WUFT-FM stations (89.1 and 103.7) changing formats, our town no longer has a genuine jazz or classical station either.
Audiophiles now are forced to choose between shallow tween pop and pop country. As such, I say it’s high time, perhaps a la pirate radio, for something rebellious (read: listenable) to take to the airwaves in Rock 104’s place.
While I agree with Quinn reducing the diversity in our radio market is a crying shame, I certainly won’t shed a tear knowing UF’s students won’t be hearing Jimmy Eat World or Papa Roach over the airwaves any time soon, and I don’t think Don McLean would either.
