This is in response to yesterday’s letter by Justin Willems, which de-legitimized the independent Student Government candidates.
The fact the Student Alliance campaign was disqualified for a paperwork technicality is not a secret. Ironically, Justin’s letter about conspiracy came out the very same day The Alligator published a story explaining the Student Alliance’s mistake and why it would not be running candidates this election.
After finding out about the party’s disqualification many other candidates and I, formerly slated with the Student Alliance,
decided to run on our own as independents. We met up later to brainstorm ideas for our individual campaigns, choosing to call ourselves The Independent Coalition.
I know I speak for all the independents when I say we have worked very hard on our campaigns without the finances or labor of a party machine.
We don’t appreciate being collateral damage to individuals who have personal issues with leaders of a party we aren’t even members of.
Those of us who chose to run independent want to distance ourselves from these kinds of partisan distractions to better represent the interests of the Student Body.
