On Saturday, the UF Surf Club will kick off its 25th annual UF Alumni Surf Challenge at Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine.
The free surf tournament against alumni will begin at 8 a.m. and end at about 3 p.m.
Surfers will compete in six-person, 15-minute heats. Each heat will be made up of three alumni and three student competitors. Officers of the club will judge performances, counting the best two waves of the heat and advancing three surfers each round.
Once the competition ends, alumni and students will gather to watch the UF football game against the University of Tennessee.
The event will end with a kickball game, a raffle with items donated from local surf shops and a party thrown by alumni.
The alumni take charge in planning the event. They fund the challenge by paying a $35 entry fee per person, design and print shirts, and supply food and drinks for the weekend. They reserve the spot for the competition months in advance.
