The Student Senate passed a resolution during Tuesday night’s meeting condemning the Dove World Outreach Center’s planned Quran burning on Sept. 11.

The resolution, which passed unanimously, was authored by Student Alliance Senator Kevin Kleponis, who was pleased to see widespread support for it.

“I think it’s something we can all be proud of,” he said.

Student Body President Ashton Charles, who represents the Unite Party, also noted the importance of the resolution during her report to the chamber.

It needs to be known that Student Government is not tolerant of people who want to burn the Quran, she said.

The Senate also passed a resolution honoring two UF students, Lamar Abel and William Belt Courtney III, who died over the summer.

Senators held a moment of silence after the passage of the bill.

Sen. Jonathan Ossip, of the Student Alliance, announced his resignation from the Senate and from his post as leader of his party.

In a letter sent to the Alligator on Tuesday afternoon, Ossip explained that while he only had four weeks until the end of his term, he still felt compelled to leave in the wake of new emerging leaders in his party and the re-emergence of the Progress Party and a three-party race.

“Emotionally, I refuse to put myself through another three-party race,” he wrote. “I only hope and pray that leaders from the Student Alliance and Progress can sit down and resolve their differences, instead of letting animosity fester in the silence.”

The Senate also approved seven assistant supervisors of election appointments, as well as four election commission seat appointments.
