Call him Mr. Flip-Flop. Call him Mr. Cover-up. Call him Mr. I’ll-Appease-Whomever-I-Can-Get-To-Vote-For-Me.

Call him Mr. Independent.

Gov. Charlie Crist announced this week he plans to consider ending the state’s appeal of a judge’s ruling that labeled Florida’s refusal to allow gay couples to adopt children as unconstitutional.

Calling his change of heart an “appropriate evolution,” Crist now has the power to help Florida evolve from the prehistoric state of being the only state in the country to specifically ban gay couples from adopting.

And we couldn’t be happier.

Keeping the embarrassing, stain-on-our-state ban in place only hurts the thousands of children awaiting homes in government services.

Supporters of the ban say it prevents children from being raised in homes without a mother and father, and is, naturally, good for the child.

As much as we wish that were true, we find it impossible to believe a child living his or her life without a family in a government-issued Oliver Twist existence will benefit more than being in a loving family.

We find it hard to believe the thousands of children living with widowed parents suffer the same pitfalls of “sin” as those growing up in a house without a mother and a father many bigoted and misguided Floridians who support the discriminatory ban so often cite as the main reason for the law.

Do the right thing, Charlie. Our children are counting on you.
