Although disagreements among Student Government parties will arise with the approach of the Sept. 28 and 29 elections, senators agreed to unanimously approve the 2011-2012 Activity and Service Fee Budget of about $16.7 million at their meeting Tuesday night.

The budget allocates about $4.9 million to Student Government, including $407,100 to Accent, which sponsors free speaking events on campus, and $672,500 to Student Government  Productions, which brings entertainers and music artists to UF.

After the budget passed, talk turned to the Dove World Outreach Center’s plans to burn copies of the Islamic holy book, the Quran, on Sept. 11.

Independent Sen. Cassia Laham encouraged senators to protest the Dove World Outreach Center’s actions, noting that Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, claimed the Quran burning would endanger American troops.

“We need to show the world that this is certainly is not how Gainesville views the Muslim community, and it’s not how the U.S. treats its Muslim brothers and sisters,” Laham said.
