In an effort to raise Democratic voter participation during this year's election season, about 35 men and women participated in a women's suffrage march around campus Thursday.

The UF College Democrats hosted the March to recreate the 1913 women's rights march on Washington, D.C.

"It's been shown that when more women vote, more Democrats are elected," said Kristin Klein, president of the UF College Democrats.

The march began on the Reitz Union North Lawn and ended at Ustler Hall where speeches were given by Mayor Craig Lowe, local political activist Karen Epple, Gainesville Women's Liberation chairwoman Natalie Maxwell and Florida Democratic Party chairwoman Karen Thurman.

Gainesville voters are progressive and vote for people based on merit, Lowe said in an interview.

"In Gainesville, four mayors were elected by popular vote, and two were women," Lowe said.

Thurman reminded the audience that men also play a part in women's rights.

"Granted, it's probably because they were afraid of going home to their wives," she joked.
