A two-and-a-half mile section of Northwest 23rd Avenue will be getting a $1.6 million face-lift.
The construction, spanning between Northwest 13th Street and Waldo Road, will last about six months, said Laurie Windham, a spokeswoman for P.B.S. and J. Consulting, a firm working with Gainesville and the Florida Department of Transportation.
The street, which received its last touch-up in 1991, will have three inches of asphalt removed and replaced, its sidewalks renewed and more wheel-chair accessible ramps installed, she said.
As many as 14,000 vehicles travel the road each day, so one lane will remain open at all times for both directions of traffic. To accommodate rush hour traffic, all lanes will remain open from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday as well as home football gamedays and the Friday before UF Homecoming.
Windham said bicyclists will continue to have access to the street but should ride with caution.
